Sex, love and money on Queer Money®:

Un-sexy Valentine’s Day gifts

On this Queer Money®, #38, we talked about celebrating Valentine’s Day in a unique and fun kinda way that creates a more honest and intimate relationship with your husband or boyfriend.

We were joined by love and relationships specialist, Dr. Jennelle, to talk about love and money and how, if you’re in love, you should talk about money to protect your family financially.

Dr. Jennelle is a Ph.D. Psychologist and Relationship Advisor. She specializes in non-traditional relationships, specifically those who transition from straight marriages to same-sex marriages because, well, that’s what she did. It’s like how we talk to queer people about money because, well, that’s who we are.

A pattern that Dr. Jenelle sees in couples that she councils is that individuals who go from one marriage to another often incorrectly assume that their new partner has the same financial beliefs and money management styles that they do. As she’s observed, we should take a lesson from our straight peers and have the money conversation sooner rather than later.

So, as we discussed on Queer Money® podcast episode #38, not everyone wants gifts. There are five different love languages and receiving gifts typically falls to four or five for more people. But our consumer society is oversold on cards, chocolates, dinners and all stuff to show your love how much you love him.

Why not give him something better? Give him quality time. Give him intimacy. Give him something that may lead to physical touch.

Give him your credit report.

“What,” you say! Look, from our experience and that of Dr. Jennell’s, gay couples don’t talk about money enough let alone soon enough. Gay couples love having sex but never have enough. As studies show couples who talk about their finances report having better sex, have an open, vulnerable talk with your Valentine man triggered by sharing your credit report.

This will set your relationship on a solid foundation and – just maybe – get him in bed.

One response to “Give Him This Sexy Valentine’s Day Gift

  1. It is truly essential to protect your family financially. There really are uncertainties in life which cannot be avoided that is why being ready financially is the best move for the future of your family. This rings true in the case of getting a divorce.
