Start reaching your big gay dreams today

On today’s Queer Money®, we talk with Megan Watt who’s the author of the prescriptive book Discover. Act. Engage., which will help you turn your seemingly unachievable life goals, or Someday Goals, into reality.

Someday Goals are goals we say we want to accomplish but put in the future. Because we don’t make our Someday Goals specific and don’t assign a timeframe in which to achieve them, we often don’t achieve them. Too many, goals never become reality.

Make your big gay dreams a reality with this Queer Money®:

What’s your big gay dream?

Dreaming of goals is easy. Achieving a dream is hard, and most of us get stuck on the first step. Trying.

Why do we get stuck on this first step? Most of us get stuck on this first step because we’ve created a myriad of reasons why [the] success [we want] isn’t for us.

  • I’m too young.
  • I’m too old.
  • I’m too skinny.
  • I’m too fat.
  • I’m gay.
  • I’m trans.
  • I’m poor.

The list of lies we tell ourselves goes on and on and on and . . . . We believe those lies, and we stay stuck in a life that’s “safe” and familiar. Watch episode #16 of Queer Money Follow-Ups for tips on breaking through these limiting beliefs.

Once you break through your limiting beliefs, what’s next? We have 4 steps.

4 steps to turn your big gay dreams into reality

1. Know thyself

It’s hard to know who we truly are when we’ve been barraged our entire life with who we are and aren’t supposed to be according to everyone else’s – mom, dad, the church, school, politicians, media, Instagram and even the gay community – beliefs and expectations.

The Latin phrase “know thyself” is one of the Delphic maxims. It’s one of the three maxims inscribed at the Temple of Apollo at Delphi.

It’s bad enough that our fathers spent a significant portion of their lives trying (failingly) to make us “men” and our mothers loathed themselves for “doing something wrong” that made us gay. It’s bad enough that hypocrites and liars from Rome to Washington use fear and the abuse of law to make us disappear. But when we finally find our tribe, we quickly learn what it takes to “fit in.”

You must have all the showy displays of being fabulous: a perfectly designed home, the latest designer clothes and accessories, Instaworthy travels and the secret to the world’s best vodka martini.

If you’re 40 or 50, you’re faded. You can’t show your gray or have wrinkles. If Drag Race and Ariana Grande aren’t your thing, Pose and Cher better be (and we all know that Madonna’s the queen).

Get to know yourself and not the cliché of yourself.

2. Uncover your ‘why’

In ‘Man’s Search for Meaning’, Victor Frankl said, “When you know your ‘why,’ you can endure any ‘how.’”

When we give ourselves the time and space to discover our ‘why’, we give ourselves the opportunity to discover our purpose. Finding this time and space is hard today with consumption available to us at every opportunity . . . when we can get into an hour-long scroll hole on Facebook and Instagram . . . when, at the click of a button, we can watch some of the best movies in history on Disney+ and Netflix right from our couch . . . when the news is always ready and willing to shock and appall us.

Give yourself time and space in journaling, meditating, walking among the trees or on the beach to be still, be silent and be receptive and bet to know your why.

3. Take a series of SMALL steps

In ‘The One Thing,’ authors Gary W. Keller and Jay Papasan ask, “What’s the ONE THING you can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”

To do this, write down the laundry list of ideas swirling in your head that you think you must do. Then, pick the three to five MOST IMPORTANT AND EFFECTIVE steps to reach your goal. Prioritize those three to five steps, then focus and execute on the first one. Everything else is unimportant for now. When you’ve finished that first step, move onto the second and so forth.

4. Connect with Your Power 100

On episode 27 of the Queer Money® podcast, guest Meghan Watt shares a tip she got from our mutual friend, Adam Carroll, called ‘Your Power 100’. The idea is that we all have numerous people who know, like and trust us. In that circle of influence are the people and resources we need to execute on our big gay dream.

Similar to Mel Robbin’s quote, “You have already have everything you need for success.”

The truth is that the universe wouldn’t give you a dream if the dream wasn’t for you. It wouldn’t give you your big gay dream if it was impossible.

Start believing that your big gay dream is possible and start doing something about your big gay dream. Today.
