Money Masters: Amanda Abella

  February 22, 2016  |    #Eliminate Debt

This month’s Money Master is Amanda Abella. We knew of Amanda Abella as the best-selling author of Make Money Your Honey. We then ran into Amanda at FinCon15 in Charlotte NC last September and we’ve been friends ever since then.

After graduating from college, Amanda didn’t find the career path she expected. What we love about Amanda is that she then paved the career path she wanted. Amanda is now a full-time personal finance writer, online business coach and millennial money expert. Additionally, Amanda blogs regularly at, she’s a public speaker and, as you know, a best selling author.

We interviewed Amanda on Watch the interview below and then check out her text interview.

1. How does someone go from not being able to find a job after college to building the Amanda Abella Empire and becoming a best-selling author?

Perseverance, determination and taking a very long and hard look at money mindset. Throughout my years working as a finance writer, business coach and expert on millennials I realized that money was more about psychology than math.

I can write “don’t spend more than you earn” a million times and nothing will change until someone takes a look at why they feel like they need to spend more than they earn.

Likewise, I’ve learned that if people don’t know why they want money or what they are going to do with it once they have it, then they open themselves up to financial trouble.

Once I really understood this, I just began applying it to myself. I had to look at why I wanted to work the way I do and why I wanted the money. I also had to look at any limiting beliefs that were stopping me from making money.

Once I realized that I have the power to make and manage money – and that it doesn’t have control over me – I was able to listen to guidance (some of it intuition, some of it coaches, some of it colleagues) that allowed me to build the business I have today. My business recently had its best quarter ever, I doubled what I was making at my desk job and 2016 is already shaping up to be a very prosperous year. I make money in ways I never even thought were possible. And the best part is I know I’m making a difference in people’s lives. It’s not just a job, it’s a mission.

None of that would have been possible had I not been willing to look at my actions, thoughts and beliefs about money. I had to get over the “I’m a broke college grad that can’t find a job” mentality that – while it served me in the form of starting a blog and looking for different solutions than a day job – was no longer serving me in creating prosperity.

2. What’s the most important message you want to share with the world?

You have all the power in the world to build your own prosperous life. Sometimes I make in a day what used to be my entire month’s salary. Seeing how that can happen will change you for life. You will never be the same again once you realize you can make whatever kind of money you want – you just have to decide to do it.

You also don’t have to wait until the day you see the money in the bank to realize you can make money. I had to hold on that belief even when I wasn’t seeing the money coming in. That’s the hard part. And that’s when most people give up. If you can be resilient when this is going on, you’ll make it.

3. What’s the most exciting thing happening in personal finance about which our readers should know?

So much! In my opinion, the most important thing is that consumers are more open to taking the reigns in their financial lives.

There’s a lot of mistrust in the financial industry as a whole so people are turning to bloggers and review sites to do their due diligence before getting loans, credit cards or other kinds of financial products. This also means that financial education is more democratized than ever before – all you have to do is Google!

Additionally, I’m hearing a lot more people talk about mindset, mindfulness, consciousness, emotions and psychology. To a certain extent this has always been a part of the conversation in personal finance (Think and Grow Rich has been around for a long time), but the information is more available than it once was. It’s also become more acceptable to talk about emotions and money in the same sentence.

And finally, you have newer FinTech companies creating solutions to problems that have been around for a long time. For example, Betterment saw the need for an easy and affordable way for young or beginning investors to get started and get some guidance. Before robo-advisors came along it would have been difficult for a 20-something to get this kind of support because they probably didn’t have a whole lot in assets.
